What is a Personal Recount Essay?

A personal recount essay is a type of writing that retells a realistic experience from your perspective, along with your reflections on what you learned from the experience and how it has changed you. This essay type helps students develop reflection, structure, and storytelling skills.

A personal recount essay is written in the first person point of view (“I”) and using the past tense. The events of the essay are told as a narrative or a story, typically following a chronological order, with a personal reflection at the end. Questions for this essay type can usually be identified as containing the phrase “Write about a time…”

Why are Personal Recount Essays Important?

This type of essay helps students develop self-awareness and the ability to reflect on experiences in order to grow as people. Writing personal recounts is also useful for improving command over written language. Writing narratives can help students hone their storytelling skills, build empathy and communicate effectively, which are key life skills applicable beyond the classroom.

Tips for Writing Personal Recount Essays

#1 Structure your Essay Appropriately

The organisation of a story or narrative consists of the following elements:

  1. Introduction – introducing characters and background information
  2. Rising action – developing conflict or building action towards the climax
  3. Climax – the main part of the story with the highest emotional intensity
  4. Falling action – how the conflict is resolved,
  5. Conclusion – the ending of the story and the author’s reflection

Structuring your essay according to this framework helps the reader follow the events of the story easier and creates an effective narrative flow.

#2 Show, Don’t Tell

Refrain from simply stating facts; make good use of descriptive language and sensory details to create vivid imagery and evoke emotions in the reader. Effective use of language to tell your story can elevate your essay above the rest.

#3 Include an Authentic Reflection

The reflection is a crucial part of the personal recount essay, thus effort and care must be spent on crafting an appropriate reflection to the events of the story. A well-written, authentic reflection makes your essay more relatable and meaningful, allowing the reader to connect with it on a personal level.
